Lloyds Bank has partnered with British Cycling to launch the “Sofa to Saddle” mobile application, a nationwide initiative designed to encourage more people to adopt cycling as part of a healthier lifestyle. The free app aims to help one million additional people begin cycling by 2028 through a structured eight-week program suitable for riders of all ages and experience levels.
The initiative marks the third year of Lloyds Bank’s partnership with British Cycling, reflecting the bank’s continued investment in community wellbeing and accessible sporting opportunities.
The Sofa to Saddle app was developed in response to research showing that the average person in the UK spends more than 18 hours each week on the sofa, while a large majority believe they should exercise more but face practical barriers to getting started.
The program provides step-by-step cycling plans, milestone achievements, bicycle maintenance guidance, and recommended routes developed with input from health professionals and members of Great Britain’s national cycling team. The goal is to make cycling more accessible for beginners while helping participants build long-term healthy habits.
British Cycling estimates that approximately 30 million people in the UK cycled at least once during the past year, representing a significant increase in participation over recent years. The organization also highlights the broader economic impact of cycling, noting that regular cycling contributes meaningful savings to the UK’s National Health Service by supporting improved public health and reducing healthcare costs.
Beyond physical health, cycling has also been associated with improved mental wellbeing, with many participants reporting reduced stress levels, greater confidence, and improved overall quality of life through regular riding.
For Lloyds Bank, the partnership extends beyond traditional financial services by strengthening its presence in community-focused initiatives that promote health, inclusion, and social impact. Corporate partnerships centered on wellbeing and sustainability have become an increasingly important component of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies among major financial institutions.
By supporting programs that encourage healthier communities, Lloyds continues to align its brand with long-term social value while building stronger engagement with customers and local communities.
The launch of the Sofa to Saddle app highlights Lloyds Bank’s continued commitment to community wellbeing through strategic partnerships beyond banking services. As participation in cycling continues to grow across the UK, initiatives that combine health, technology, and community engagement may generate lasting social benefits while reinforcing Lloyds’ broader sustainability and corporate responsibility objectives.
