SKN | Wells Fargo Expands Growth Outlook as Balance-Sheet Flexibility Returns

Key Takeaways:

  • Wells Fargo expects 2026 loan growth to exceed its previous mid-single-digit forecast.
  • Average loans increased roughly 12% year over year in the second quarter, led by credit cards, auto lending and commercial loans.
  • The removal of the Federal Reserve’s asset-growth restriction has given the bank greater flexibility to expand across its major businesses.
  • Stronger loan growth and improving net interest margin performance could support revenue generation while Wells Fargo continues its efficiency program.

Wells Fargo is entering a more flexible phase of its growth strategy. Speaking at the Barclays Global Financial Services Conference, CFO Mike Santomassimo said the bank expects 2026 loan growth to exceed its previous mid-single-digit forecast, underscoring the significance of the greater balance-sheet flexibility created by the removal of its long-standing asset-growth restriction.

Wells Fargo Can Now Deploy Its Balance Sheet More Fully

The most important development for the bank is the change in its operating constraints. The Federal Reserve lifted Wells Fargo’s asset-growth restriction in June 2025, while the remaining provisions of the 2018 enforcement action were terminated in March 2026. This has given management greater freedom to pursue organic balance-sheet expansion across consumer banking, wealth management, commercial banking and corporate and investment banking.

The effect is already visible in lending. Average loans increased approximately 12% year over year during the second quarter, with growth across credit cards, auto lending and commercial loans. Management now sees sufficient momentum to raise its expectations relative to the earlier full-year framework.

Credit Demand Is Strong Without a Visible Deterioration

Santomassimo described the U.S. consumer as healthy, with spending remaining resilient and no meaningful deterioration in delinquency trends. Household debt-to-income levels also remain favorable overall.

For Wells Fargo, this combination provides a constructive foundation for additional lending. Importantly, the bank is not describing unlimited credit expansion. Middle-market customers remain cautious in their business decisions, creating a more selective corporate borrowing environment. That restraint allows Wells Fargo to expand while continuing to monitor credit quality and borrower behavior.

Investment Banking and NIM Add Additional Growth Levers

Wells Fargo is also directing resources toward corporate and investment banking, particularly industry coverage in healthcare and technology, media and telecommunications. The bank expects third-quarter investment banking fees and markets and trading revenue to increase at mid-single-digit rates.

Meanwhile, third-quarter net interest margin is performing better than previously anticipated. Wells Fargo has nevertheless maintained its 2026 net interest income outlook at $50 billion and its expense guidance at $55.7 billion. The approach reflects management’s preference to preserve its broader financial framework while allowing operating performance to develop ahead of expectations.

Efficiency Remains Central to the Strategy

The final component is efficiency. Wells Fargo continues to identify opportunities to reduce expenses, with artificial intelligence potentially accelerating productivity improvements across its operations. Management maintained full-year expense guidance despite higher performance-related compensation costs in wealth management, indicating that efficiencies elsewhere are expected to offset selected increases.

For sophisticated wealth holders, the key signal is the combination of greater balance-sheet freedom, stronger loan growth and disciplined cost management. The next indicators to watch are whether lending continues to exceed guidance, whether NIM strength persists and how effectively Wells Fargo converts its newly available capacity into durable growth.
