Key Points

  • Charles Schwab delivered record first-quarter 2026 financial results. Revenue increased 16% year over year to US$6.5 billion, while adjusted earnings per share reached a record US$1.43, up 38%.
  • Client engagement strengthened across brokerage, wealth management, and lending. Schwab attracted US$158 billion in core net new assets, excluding a one-time mutual fund clearing outflow, and reported 1.3 million new brokerage accounts.
  • AI and cryptocurrency services are becoming central to Schwab’s growth strategy. Planned initiatives include AI-powered portfolio insights, digital assistants, and a phased rollout of spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether, while management indicated that earnings were tracking above its previous financial scenario.

Record Revenue and Earnings Reflect Strong Client Activity

Charles Schwab reported a strong start to 2026, supported by higher client engagement across trading, wealth management, and banking services. During its spring business update, President and CEO Rick Wurster highlighted record client growth and financial results under the company’s “Through Clients’ Eyes” strategy.

First-quarter revenue rose 16% year over year to a record US$6.5 billion. Adjusted earnings per share reached US$1.43, increasing 38% from the prior-year period. Adjusted expenses grew 5%, allowing Schwab to achieve an adjusted pre-tax profit margin of 51.4%.

Net interest revenue increased 16% year over year, supported by the reduction of higher-cost bank borrowings and increased use of lending products. Asset management and administration fees climbed 15% to a record US$1.8 billion, while trading revenue advanced 20% as client activity remained elevated.

Schwab supported a record 9.9 million daily average trades during the quarter, demonstrating the scale of its brokerage platform amid volatile financial markets.

Asset Gathering and Lending Strengthen Client Relationships

Client growth remained a major contributor to Schwab’s performance. The company opened 1.3 million brokerage accounts, up 10% from the previous year. Excluding a one-time mutual fund clearing outflow, core net new assets reached US$158 billion, a first-quarter record.

Total client assets stood at US$11.8 trillion in the quarter, while management referenced approximately US$12 trillion across its broader client platform. Schwab serves approximately 47 million client accounts, providing opportunities to expand relationships across brokerage, wealth management, and lending.

Managed investing net flows increased 46% to an all-time high. Within that business, Schwab Wealth Advisory generated a record US$10 billion in net flows, up 90% year over year.

Lending also expanded. Bank loan balances reached US$61 billion, representing 29% annual growth, while client margin loan balances approached US$127 billion at quarter-end. These developments demonstrate increasing engagement across multiple financial products, although margin lending and other credit activities also require disciplined risk management.

AI Investment Targets Efficiency and New Revenue Opportunities

Artificial intelligence is emerging as a central component of Schwab’s operating strategy. Management described AI as both a tool for improving employee productivity and a means of delivering more personalized services to clients at scale.

The company has equipped its approximately 33,000 employees with AI tools, while more than 8,000 technologists are using AI to assist with software design, coding, testing, and debugging. Existing applications include tools that summarize client interactions, support service professionals, and help employees respond to complex inquiries.

Schwab also outlined plans for AI-enabled Portfolio Insights, designed to provide clients with information about portfolio performance, concentration risk, asset allocation, and relevant research. A generative search capability and an Investor AI Assistant were also planned, with the initial assistant expected to launch in June according to management’s update.

These initiatives could improve operating efficiency and deepen client relationships. However, their long-term financial contribution will depend on adoption, implementation costs, customer trust, and the company’s ability to translate improved productivity into measurable earnings growth.

Cryptocurrency Expansion Broadens Schwab’s Offering

Schwab also announced progress toward launching Schwab Crypto, beginning with spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether. Management said an employee pilot was underway and that a phased client rollout was expected to begin in the coming weeks.

The initial pricing was set at 75 basis points of the dollar value of each trade. Additional cryptocurrencies and deposit and withdrawal capabilities were planned for later stages.

The initiative could help Schwab retain clients who increasingly expect access to digital assets alongside traditional investments. Its established brokerage platform, research resources, and customer service infrastructure may support adoption, although cryptocurrency trading introduces market, operational, regulatory, and custody-related risks.

Management Raises Its Earnings Outlook

CFO Mike Verdeschi stated that, following the first-quarter performance and based on management’s expectations for interest rates and continued client engagement, Schwab was tracking above the US$5.70–US$5.80 adjusted EPS range implied by its January financial scenario.

That earlier scenario excluded the impact of share repurchases and the Forge acquisition. Management planned to provide a more comprehensive update on its 2026 financial outlook in July.

The statement represents an improvement in management’s assessment of the earnings trajectory, rather than a finalized full-year earnings forecast. Future results will remain sensitive to interest rates, client cash allocations, trading activity, expenses, and broader market conditions.

Closing Insights

Charles Schwab’s first-quarter results demonstrate the financial benefits of strong client engagement, expanding wealth services, and disciplined expense growth. Record revenue, higher adjusted earnings, and increased asset gathering provide a solid foundation for the company’s current growth narrative.

The next phase depends on execution across AI, cryptocurrency, lending, and wealth management. These initiatives offer opportunities to deepen client relationships and diversify revenue, but they also introduce implementation and risk-management requirements.

For investors, the key consideration is whether Schwab can sustain its earnings momentum while converting technology investment and broader product adoption into durable profitability across different market environments.
