Key Takeaways:

  • JPMorgan believes the recent rise in government bond yields may be approaching its limit, potentially easing pressure on global equity markets into year-end 2026.
  • The bank’s strategists, led by Mislav Matejka, argue that the bond selloff has become extended and that stabilising yields could reduce further pressure on equity valuations.
  • JPMorgan expects limited additional upward pressure from Federal Reserve rate expectations, while emphasising the importance of bond-market stability for investor confidence.

JPMorgan Sees Bond-Yield Pressure Approaching a Turning Point

JPMorgan sees scope for a recovery in global equities if government bond yields stabilise during the final months of 2026. In a research note, strategists led by Mislav Matejka reiterated that the recent increase in yields appears extended, with bond markets showing signs of oversold conditions.

The bank said it had identified the potential turning point roughly two weeks earlier, when the pace of the bond-market selloff suggested that further increases in yields could become more limited. JPMorgan’s fixed-income strategists also have year-end targets for longer-dated government bond yields across major markets that are either unchanged from or below current levels.

This outlook does not depend on an immediate collapse in yields. Rather, JPMorgan’s assessment suggests that a period of stability could be enough to reduce one of the key sources of pressure on equity valuations.

Why Stabilising Yields Could Support Equity Valuations

Higher bond yields have weighed on equities by making fixed-income investments more competitive and increasing the cost of capital for companies. During the sharpest phase of the recent yield increase, forward price-to-earnings multiples declined by approximately three points for both the MSCI All-Country World Equity Index and the S&P 500. European equity valuations fell by around two points.

JPMorgan believes stabilising yields could limit further valuation compression. As the strategists noted, “The multiple compression might not need to continue.” For investors, the distinction is important: equities may receive support if the pressure from rising discount rates eases, even without a significant decline in borrowing costs.

The bank also sees potential benefits from lower bond-market volatility. More stable yields could improve perceptions of economic sustainability, reduce pressure on household finances and ease concerns surrounding the funding requirements of artificial-intelligence infrastructure.

Federal Reserve Expectations May Have Limited Room to Shift Further

JPMorgan’s analysis identifies expectations for US monetary policy as a major factor behind this year’s increase in Treasury yields. According to the strategists, movements in federal funds futures largely explain the rise in the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield.

The bank does not expect substantial additional adjustments to Federal Reserve rate expectations beyond those already reflected in markets. If that assessment holds, a major source of upward pressure on longer-term borrowing costs may have diminished.

However, this remains a market outlook rather than a guarantee. Unexpected economic data, changes in inflation expectations or renewed bond-market volatility could challenge the stabilisation scenario.

What JPMorgan’s Outlook Means for Investors

For high-net-worth investors, JPMorgan’s message is that bond-market stability may be as important as the direction of interest rates themselves. A pause in rising yields could help support equity valuations, but it would not remove company-specific risks or guarantee a year-end rally.

The key indicators to monitor are longer-dated government bond yields, Federal Reserve expectations and the durability of equity valuations. If yields stabilise near current levels, the pressure on global equities could ease; if they resume climbing, valuation risks may return.
