Key Points

  • Banco Santander will distribute an interim cash dividend of €0.127 per share on November 2, 2026, representing a total payment of approximately €1.85 billion and a 10% increase year over year.
  • Combined shareholder remuneration associated with the first half of 2026 reaches approximately €3.7 billion, including the cash dividend and a completed €1.825 billion share buyback.
  • From 2027, Santander plans to allocate approximately 35% of group profit to cash dividends and 15% to share repurchases, maintaining an overall distribution target of 50%.

Santander Increases Cash Distributions to Shareholders

Banco Santander is distributing approximately €1.85 billion to shareholders through an interim cash dividend payable on November 2, 2026.

The payment amounts to €0.127 per share and is charged against the bank’s 2026 financial results. It represents a 10% increase compared with the distribution made during the corresponding period last year.

The cash payment is equivalent to approximately 16.5% of Santander’s accumulated net profit through September, which reached €11.17 billion.

The distribution follows the completion of a €1.825 billion share repurchase programme on October 28. Together, the cash dividend and share buyback bring shareholder remuneration associated with the first half of 2026 to approximately €3.7 billion.

The structure demonstrates Santander’s continued use of both direct cash distributions and share repurchases to return capital to investors.

Dividend Calendar and Capital Distribution Policy

Santander established October 28 as the final trading day on which investors could purchase shares with entitlement to the interim dividend.

The shares began trading ex-dividend on October 29, while October 30 was designated as the record date. Payment is scheduled for November 2.

The bank’s ordinary distribution policy currently targets approximately 50% of group ordinary profit, divided broadly equally between cash dividends and share buybacks.

Including the latest completed programme, buybacks charged to 2025 results, and distributions associated with the sale of Santander Poland, the bank expects to have allocated close to €9 billion toward its objective of distributing at least €10 billion through share repurchases during 2025 and 2026.

Chairwoman Ana Botín highlighted the consistency of the dividend growth trajectory, describing the latest increase as the fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth. According to her statement, the interim dividend per share has increased by 162% since 2021.

Cash Dividends to Gain Greater Weight From 2027

Santander plans to maintain an overall shareholder distribution rate of approximately 50% of group profit during the 2026–2028 period.

However, the composition of distributions will change beginning with the results for 2027. The proposed allocation will increase the proportion of cash dividends to approximately 35% of group profit, while share repurchases will account for around 15%.

This represents a shift toward more direct cash remuneration for shareholders without changing the bank’s overall distribution target.

For income-focused investors, the change could make Santander’s capital return policy more cash-oriented. For the bank, it also introduces a different balance between dividend commitments and share count reduction.

Capital Priorities and Potential Extraordinary Distributions

Santander CEO Héctor Grisi has indicated that additional extraordinary shareholder payments could be considered once the bank completes its €10 billion remuneration objective.

However, management emphasized that organic investment will remain the first priority when allocating surplus capital.

Grisi explained that the bank would favor reinvesting capital when doing so could generate stronger returns for shareholders. Capital exceeding the institution’s targeted CET1 range of 12% to 13% would be considered for distribution, with the choice between dividends and buybacks determined at the appropriate time.

The executive also highlighted recent capital requirements associated with Santander’s acquisitions of Webster and TSB, which affected the bank’s capital position.

At the end of the third quarter, Santander’s phased-in CET1 ratio stood at 12.7%, down four basis points year over year and 1.3 percentage points from the 14% reported at the end of June.

This capital position provides important context for evaluating the bank’s distribution capacity. Although shareholder remuneration remains substantial, future decisions will depend on capital requirements, acquisition-related considerations, and opportunities to generate profitable growth.

Closing Insights

Santander’s €1.85 billion interim cash dividend reinforces its commitment to substantial shareholder distributions, bringing combined cash and share repurchase remuneration associated with the first half of 2026 to approximately €3.7 billion.

The planned shift toward a 35% cash dividend and 15% share buyback allocation from 2027 represents a meaningful adjustment in the composition of shareholder returns.

Nevertheless, management’s capital allocation hierarchy remains clear: organic investment takes priority when it offers superior returns, while surplus capital above the targeted CET1 range may be returned to shareholders.

For investors, the central consideration is how Santander balances attractive distributions with capital resilience, acquisition integration, and sustainable long-term earnings growth.
