Key Takeaways:

  • Wells Fargo plans to eliminate another 173 positions in Iowa and Virginia, adding to a workforce reduction of 10,829 employees during the first nine months of 2026.
  • The bank reported nearly $6 billion in third-quarter net income, up 6% year over year, while revenue increased 2% to $21.9 billion. Lower personnel expenses contributed to its cost-efficiency efforts.
  • Management is repositioning operations and investing in artificial intelligence, with CFO Mike Santomassimo identifying opportunities to improve productivity and limit future staffing requirements across several business functions.

Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) is continuing to reduce its workforce as it pursues a more efficient operating structure, even as its financial performance strengthens. The bankโ€™s latest workforce disclosures identify 173 additional positions scheduled for elimination in Iowa and Virginia. These reductions form part of a broader restructuring that has reduced Wells Fargoโ€™s employee headcount by more than 10,000 since the beginning of 2026. For investors and internationally diversified wealth holders, the development offers insight into how a major U.S. banking institution is managing operating costs while redirecting resources toward technology and strategic business priorities.

Further Workforce Reductions Target Support Operations

Wells Fargo plans to eliminate 86 positions at its Jordan Creek campus in West Des Moines, Iowa, effective December 26, 2026. The announcement follows an October 27 notice filed with Iowa Workforce Development and represents the largest single layoff round at that campus since 2021.

The bank is also eliminating 87 positions at its Roanoke County, Virginia, customer-support facility. According to company notices, the separations are scheduled across November 28, December 12 and December 26. Notably, 82 of the affected positions are associated with fraud and claims operations. Wells Fargo described the reductions as an exit from support operations within its Chief Operating Office, with one additional position affected in Corporate Risk.

Eligible employees will receive severance benefits and career-transition assistance. The decision is particularly notable because the Roanoke facility previously received an announced $87 million modernization and expansion investment expected to create approximately 1,100 jobs.

Headcount Declines Despite Stronger Financial Performance

Wells Fargoโ€™s third-quarter financial supplement reported 194,369 employees at September 30, 2026, compared with 205,198 at the end of December 2025. This represents a net reduction of 10,829 employees in nine months. Compared with September 2025, headcount declined by 16,452, approximately 8%.

These figures measure the overall change in staffing, not layoffs alone, because hiring and voluntary departures also influence total employment. Nevertheless, the scale of the reduction demonstrates the extent of the bankโ€™s restructuring.

The changes have coincided with stronger earnings. Wells Fargo generated nearly $6 billion in third-quarter net income, an increase of 6% year over year, while revenue rose 2% to $21.9 billion. Personnel expenses also declined by $276 million year over year, partly reflecting lower severance costs and efficiency initiatives associated with a smaller workforce.

Artificial Intelligence Becomes Part of Workforce Planning

Technology investment is another component of Wells Fargoโ€™s operating strategy. At the Barclays Global Financial Services Conference on September 15, CFO Mike Santomassimo discussed the potential for AI to improve productivity across technology, legal, finance, operations and call-center functions.

He specifically highlighted AI-powered coding tools and the possibility of supporting business expansion without proportionate increases in staffing. His remarks indicate that artificial intelligence is becoming a consideration in the bankโ€™s longer-term workforce planning, although it should not be treated as the sole explanation for the current reductions.

Going forward, the central question is whether Wells Fargo can sustain revenue growth and operating efficiency while maintaining service quality, risk controls and operational resilience. Investors should monitor personnel expenses, workforce disclosures and the measurable productivity benefits of AI deployment. For global wealth holders, the bankโ€™s restructuring illustrates how even profitable financial institutions are reassessing their operating models as technology and cost discipline reshape U.S. banking.
