Key Points:

  • BNP Paribas’ Pillar 2 Requirement (P2R) rises to 1.90%, an increase of 17 basis points compared with the 2025 SREP.
  • The bank’s consolidated CET1 requirement will reach 10.73% from January 1, 2027, while its CET1 ratio stood at 12.91% as of September 30, 2026.
  • BNP Paribas says the revised requirements do not affect its CET1 trajectory and continues to expect a CET1 ratio above 13% by December 31, 2026.

BNP Paribas has received the European Central Bank’s outcome of the 2026 Supervisory Review and Evaluation Process (SREP), establishing the consolidated capital and leverage requirements that will apply to the Group from January 1, 2027. While the revised framework increases the bank’s Pillar 2 Requirement, BNP Paribas maintains that the impact on its Common Equity Tier 1 capital requirement is limited and does not alter its existing capital trajectory.

ECB Review Raises Pillar 2 Capital Requirement

Under the new methodology implemented by the Single Supervisory Mechanism, BNP Paribas’ Pillar 2 Requirement will increase to 1.90%, representing a rise of 17 basis points compared with the 2025 SREP. Of this requirement, 1.07% must be met through Common Equity Tier 1 capital.

However, the impact on the CET1 requirement is limited to just 2 basis points compared with the previous SREP. The bank states that this adjustment does not affect its capital trajectory, indicating that the revised supervisory assessment does not change its current capital expectations.

Capital Requirements and Existing Buffers

Effective January 1, 2027, BNP Paribas will face a minimum consolidated CET1 requirement of 10.73%, excluding Pillar 2 Guidance. The requirement includes a 1.75% Other Systemically Important Institution buffer, a 2.50% capital conservation buffer, a 1.07% Pillar 2 Requirement, a 0.82% countercyclical buffer, and a 0.09% systemic buffer.

The Group’s other regulatory thresholds will stand at 12.58% for Tier 1 capital and 15.06% for total capital. The leverage ratio requirement remains unchanged at 3.85%, including a 0.10% Pillar 2 Requirement applicable to the leverage ratio. Pillar 2 Guidance also remains unchanged from 2025, within a range of zero to 100 basis points.

BNP Paribas Maintains Capital Headroom

The bank’s September 30, 2026 figures show capital ratios comfortably above the minimum requirements scheduled to take effect in January. Its CET1 ratio stood at 12.91%, compared with the forthcoming 10.73% requirement. The Tier 1 ratio was 15.59%, against a 12.58% threshold, while total capital reached 17.75%, compared with the 15.06% minimum. Its leverage ratio was 4.44%, above the required 3.85%.

These figures indicate regulatory capital headroom across all four reported measures. BNP Paribas also reiterated the expectation, communicated alongside its third-quarter 2026 results, that its CET1 ratio will exceed 13% at December 31, 2026.

What the Updated Supervisory Framework Means for Investors

The revised SREP requirements provide investors with an updated view of the regulatory capital thresholds governing BNP Paribas from 2027. The increase in P2R warrants monitoring, but the limited CET1 impact and the Group’s existing capital headroom are important elements of the assessment. Attention will now turn to the bank’s year-end capital position and its ability to maintain the stated trajectory while operating under the updated supervisory framework.
