Charles Schwab has opened a public waitlist for Schwab Crypto, a new account that will allow eligible clients to buy and sell Bitcoin and Ethereum directly. The company has confirmed that it remains on track for a launch in the first half of 2026, with an initial limited rollout expected during the second quarter.
Chief Executive Officer Rick Wurster previously indicated to Barronโs in early March that the company was preparing a restricted launch, with broader client access expected to follow. Before the service becomes available to selected customers, Schwab plans to conduct internal testing with employees.
The initiative represents a further step in the firmโs expansion into digital assets. Rather than introducing cryptocurrency trading through its conventional brokerage accounts, Schwab will offer the service through Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB. Applicants must already maintain a Schwab brokerage account to qualify.
The initial rollout will be limited to clients based in the United States. Residents of New York and Louisiana will not be eligible at launch, while customers in U.S. territories and international jurisdictions will also be excluded.
Schwab has indicated that accounts may be restricted or closed if customers relocate to jurisdictions where the service is not supported. These limitations establish a controlled initial operating framework while the firm introduces its cryptocurrency offering.
The account will also have important restrictions concerning asset transfers. Schwab will not accept cryptocurrency deposits or permit crypto disbursements at launch. Consequently, clients will not be able to transfer existing Bitcoin or Ethereum holdings from external wallets or cryptocurrency exchanges into Schwab Crypto.
The companyโs disclosures further clarify that cryptocurrency holdings through Premier Bank will not be protected by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) and will not be insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Digital assets will not be treated as bank deposits and may lose value.
For investors accustomed to conventional brokerage and banking protections, these distinctions are central to evaluating the accountโs operational structure and risk exposure.
Schwab enters the cryptocurrency market with an extensive established client network. As of February, the company managed approximately $12.22 trillion in client assets across 38.9 million active brokerage accounts. Daily average trading activity reached a record 9.9 million trades.
The firmโs existing brokerage platform already provides clients with access to cryptocurrency exchange-traded products. Schwab clients collectively hold more than 20% of the industryโs crypto exchange-traded products, demonstrating the scale of its existing exposure to digital asset investment demand.
The companyโs position has evolved considerably over recent years. In 2019, Schwab characterized cryptocurrency as purely speculative. By 2021, it was exploring white-label cryptocurrency brokerage solutions, and in 2023, it helped establish EDX Markets.
Wurster has also identified potential applications for stablecoins. During an earnings call, he said stablecoins were likely to play a role in transactions conducted on blockchain networks. This suggests that Schwabโs broader digital asset strategy may extend beyond direct cryptocurrency trading as blockchain-based financial infrastructure develops.
Schwabโs planned launch comes as established financial institutions increasingly explore direct digital asset access and regulated infrastructure.
Morgan Stanley is preparing to offer spot trading in Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana through E*Trade, working with cryptocurrency infrastructure provider Zerohash. The firm has also filed for a national trust bank charter.
Meanwhile, EDX Markets, backed by Schwab alongside Citadel and Fidelity, applied for a national bank charter with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency this week.
These developments illustrate two related dimensions of institutional participation: providing clients with direct access to digital assets and developing regulated financial infrastructure to support cryptocurrency-related activity.
For traditional financial institutions, the strategic opportunity extends beyond trading commissions. Digital asset services may strengthen client relationships, support the retention of investment assets and position established platforms within an evolving financial ecosystem. However, the commercial value of these initiatives will depend on regulatory clarity, operational resilience, custody arrangements and sustained client demand.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $68,864, while Ethereum changed hands near $2,152. Ethereum remained approximately 59% below its all-time high, which was reached the previous August.
Schwab shares closed Thursday at approximately $93.77, representing an increase of roughly 19% over the preceding year.
These market figures provide context for Schwabโs planned entry but do not establish a direct relationship between its cryptocurrency strategy and recent share-price performance. The companyโs broader financial scale, established brokerage relationships and existing exposure to crypto-related investment products provide a substantial distribution platform for the new service.
Schwabโs planned cryptocurrency account represents a measured expansion of digital asset access within a traditional financial institution. Its initial restrictions on geographic eligibility, asset transfers and investor protections indicate a controlled approach rather than an unrestricted integration of cryptocurrency into conventional banking services.
For wealth managers, private investors and financial institutions, the development highlights the growing importance of evaluating how digital assets are incorporated into established investment platforms. The next areas to monitor include the pace of Schwabโs client rollout, the eventual expansion of geographic eligibility, the introduction of additional asset-transfer capabilities and the potential role of stablecoins in its broader strategy.
More broadly, competition among established financial institutions may accelerate the development of regulated digital asset services. However, long-term adoption will depend on whether these offerings can combine accessibility and operational efficiency with appropriate custody, disclosure and risk-management standards.
