Barclays has appointed Lynne Burns as Group Human Resources Director, bringing more than three decades of experience in human resources leadership across the banking and professional services sectors. The appointment marks an important leadership transition as the bank continues executing its long-term strategy focused on operational efficiency, digital transformation, and organizational performance.
Burns replaces Tristram Roberts, who has retired after nearly 13 years at Barclays, including more than a decade serving as Group Human Resources Director. During his tenure, Roberts oversaw the modernization of the bank’s HR function through a period of significant industry change.
Burns joins Barclays from Linklaters, where she served as Chief People Officer. Before that, she spent seven years at HSBC in several senior human resources leadership positions, including Group Head of Talent, Global Head of Human Resources for the Global Commercial and Global Banking & Markets divisions, and Head of Human Resources for HSBC UK.
Earlier in her career, Burns also held multiple leadership roles at Royal Bank of Scotland, giving her extensive experience managing talent, organizational transformation, and workforce strategy across major financial institutions.
Barclays Group Chief Executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan said Burns’ experience in driving organizational performance, cultural transformation, leadership development, and board engagement will support the bank’s next phase of strategic execution.
Management expects her leadership to help strengthen collaboration across the organization while continuing efforts to modernize operations and foster a high-performing, inclusive workplace culture.
The appointment reflects the growing importance financial institutions place on human capital management as banks continue investing in digital capabilities, operational efficiency, and workforce development. Large global banks increasingly view leadership, talent retention, and organizational culture as competitive advantages alongside technology and financial performance.
As the banking sector adapts to changing customer expectations and rapid technological advancement, experienced HR leadership plays an increasingly important role in supporting long-term business transformation.
Barclays’ appointment of Lynne Burns underscores the bank’s continued focus on leadership, talent development, and organizational transformation. With extensive experience across global banking and professional services, Burns is expected to help guide Barclays through its next phase of strategic growth while building on the foundation established by her predecessor.
