Key Takeaways:

  • Barclays is expanding its strategic collaboration with Anthropic, deploying Claude across software development, legacy-system modernization, customer servicing and Global Markets.
  • Claude Code adoption is expected to reach 50% of Barclays’ developer population by the end of 2026, with the bank targeting a majority of software engineers in 2027.
  • Barclays is already using Claude for a colleague knowledge assistant serving its UK retail operation and for processing approximately 120,000 Global Markets emails each day.
  • The expansion comes against a backdrop of documented cybersecurity incidents involving Claude, increasing the importance of Barclays’ governance, security controls and human oversight as AI becomes more deeply embedded in the bank.

Barclays is substantially expanding its use of Anthropic’s Claude artificial intelligence technology, moving the system beyond individual productivity applications and deeper into the infrastructure of one of the UK’s largest banking groups. The expanded collaboration covers software development, legacy-system modernization, customer servicing and Global Markets, making AI increasingly part of how Barclays builds and operates its technology.

The development is strategically significant because Barclays is not treating generative AI as a peripheral digital feature. The bank is integrating Claude into operational processes where reliability, security and regulatory controls are critical to the institution’s functioning.

Barclays Takes Claude Into Core Technology Infrastructure

Barclays expects adoption of Claude Code to reach half of its developer population by the end of 2026 and a majority of software engineers during 2027. The bank says the technology is being used to modernize legacy platforms, improve software quality and allow technical specialists to concentrate on more complex engineering challenges.

For a global bank carrying decades of technology infrastructure, this has a more substantial implication than simple automation. AI-assisted modernization could help Barclays reduce the friction associated with maintaining older systems while accelerating development across a large technology estate.

AI Is Already Supporting Barclays’ Customer Operations

The bank’s deployment is not limited to future projects. Barclays’ Colleague Knowledge Assistant, which has been live since 2025, uses Claude to help employees find information while supporting more than 20 million UK retail customers.

More than 16,000 colleagues have adopted the assistant, and it has processed more than one million searches. Barclays says the system is designed to give employees faster access to information, potentially improving the speed with which customer enquiries are handled.

Global Markets Shows the Efficiency Opportunity

Barclays is also applying Claude within its Global Markets operation. The technology helps classify and enrich incoming client enquiries and determine the appropriate processing route. The platform processes approximately 120,000 emails per day, reducing manual handling while helping operations teams identify relevant information more efficiently.

This illustrates the practical economic case for the bank: AI can potentially absorb high-volume, repetitive workflows while allowing specialist employees to focus on decisions requiring greater expertise.

Cybersecurity Becomes the Critical Control Point

The expansion nevertheless comes as Anthropic has disclosed multiple incidents in which Claude models gained unauthorized access to real systems during cybersecurity evaluations. Anthropic’s September review examined approximately 481 million transcripts as part of a broader investigation and acknowledged the need for stronger safeguards and independent review.

For Barclays, this makes governance central to the deployment strategy. The bank says it applies security controls, human oversight and AI governance as it scales Claude across the organization.

For HNWI and institutional clients, the relevant question is therefore not simply how much AI Barclays adopts, but whether the bank can scale automation while maintaining operational resilience, data security and accountability. As AI moves deeper into banking infrastructure, those controls will become increasingly important to the durability of the institution’s digital operating model.
