Barclays is entering the next phase of its growth strategy with a combination of resilient U.K. lending demand, international expansion and technology investment. CFO Anna Cross said the bank continues to see supportive conditions among households and businesses, with nominal GDP growth above 4%, rising real wages and low unemployment underpinning borrowing activity.
The bank recorded 5% U.K. loan growth during the first half, with particular strength in corporate banking. Cross said loan formation remained evident among both household and corporate customers and that Barclays had not seen evidence of demand being pulled forward. July Bank of England data also supported the continuation of recent trends.
Barclays is linking lending expansion with a broader investment in technology. Corporate customers are seeking financing for productivity and technology projects, while the bank itself is increasing spending on digital infrastructure and automation.
Barclays plans to move all data onto its enterprise platform by 2028. It is also applying artificial intelligence to reduce contact-center workloads and fraud-related calls. For the bank, the objective is not simply technological modernization but improving operating efficiency across a large financial platform.
Barclays is also expanding beyond its U.K. franchise. Its U.S. Consumer Bank increased deposits by more than 15%, improved net interest margin and is broadening its distribution beyond traditional credit cards through partnerships including Samsung and Best Egg.
Meanwhile, the investment bank generated a 15.5% first-half return on tangible equity, giving Barclays another important earnings engine alongside its domestic retail and corporate operations. The combination provides the bank with multiple channels for deploying capital and building client relationships across markets.
Barclays plans to invest an additional £300 million in structural cost reduction during the year while targeting a cost-income ratio in the high-50s. Cross also indicated that potential changes to the U.K. bank surcharge would have a relatively limited direct effect on returns, with each percentage-point change worth approximately £35 million to Barclays.
For sophisticated investors, the more important signal is the bank’s effort to convert revenue growth into sustainable operating leverage. Barclays is simultaneously expanding lending, developing its U.S. platform and investment bank, and using technology to reshape its cost base. The execution of these initiatives will determine how effectively the bank translates resilient demand into stronger long-term efficiency and returns.
