Charles Schwab Asset Management has renamed its Schwab Crypto Thematic ETF to the Schwab Crypto Thematic Natural Language Processing ETF, placing greater emphasis on the artificial intelligence technology that has powered the fund’s stock selection process since its launch in 2022.
While the new name brings natural language processing (NLP) into the spotlight, the underlying investment strategy remains unchanged. The fund continues to trade under the ticker symbol STCE, maintains its 0.30% annual expense ratio, and follows the same Schwab Crypto Thematic Index used since inception.
Although the rebranding is new, Schwab has relied on natural language processing from the beginning. The proprietary methodology analyzes publicly available corporate documents to identify companies with meaningful exposure to cryptocurrency-related themes.
The screening process evaluates the relevance of company disclosures, assigns thematic scores, applies liquidity and eligibility requirements, and incorporates additional review before determining portfolio weightings. The updated prospectus provides more detail on the methodology but does not materially change the investment process.
Unlike spot cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds, STCE invests exclusively in publicly traded companies that participate in the digital asset ecosystem rather than directly holding cryptocurrencies.
As of July 27, the ETF managed approximately $232.1 million in assets across 42 holdings. Its largest positions included Bitcoin mining company Bitdeer Technologies, cryptocurrency miner CleanSpark, and Trump Media & Technology Group. Portfolio holdings and weightings may change over time as market conditions and index rebalancing occur.
The decision to emphasize natural language processing reflects the broader trend of asset managers highlighting artificial intelligence capabilities as AI becomes increasingly integrated into investment research and portfolio construction.
By drawing greater attention to its AI-driven methodology, Schwab reinforces its position in the growing market for thematic investment products that combine emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital assets.
Charles Schwab’s rebranding of its crypto-themed ETF does not alter the fund’s investment strategy but places renewed focus on the artificial intelligence techniques that have supported portfolio construction since launch. As demand for AI-enabled investment solutions continues to grow, firms may increasingly emphasize advanced analytics and machine learning capabilities to differentiate their products while expanding access to emerging sectors such as digital assets.
