SKN | JPMorgan and Wells Fargo: Why Their Valuations Remain Under Scrutiny

Key Takeaways:

  • JPMorgan Chase continues to attract attention over a valuation that some market commentators view as low relative to its earnings power and operating strength.
  • Wells Fargo has gained meaningful operating momentum following the removal of its Federal Reserve asset cap, although compliance costs and slower net interest income growth remain considerations.
  • Both banks are demonstrating stronger investment-banking and markets activity, but the market is demanding evidence that these gains can translate into durable earnings growth.
  • For sophisticated investors, the central issue is not simply the headline multiple, but the quality and durability of the earnings supporting it.

JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo are increasingly being viewed through a valuation lens as their operating performance diverges from how the market prices their shares. Jim Cramer has repeatedly argued that both banks trade at multiples that do not fully reflect their underlying strength, although the reasons differ materially between the two institutions.

JPMorgan’s Earnings Power Challenges Its Multiple

JPMorgan’s second-quarter performance provides the clearest foundation for the valuation debate. Net income reached approximately $21 billion, compared with $14.9 billion a year earlier. Even after excluding significant one-time investment and Visa-related gains, net income remained approximately $16.9 billion.

The bank also recorded strong momentum across businesses that matter to its long-term franchise. Markets revenue increased 35%, while investment-banking fees climbed 30%. This combination reinforces JPMorgan’s diversified earnings model, where trading, advisory, lending and deposits can support profitability through different market environments.

That diversification is particularly relevant for wealthy investors assessing the resilience of a major banking relationship. JPMorgan’s scale means its earnings are not dependent on a single revenue stream, although its valuation increasingly assumes that management can sustain this breadth of performance.

Wells Fargo’s Repositioning Is Producing Tangible Results

Wells Fargo presents a different strategic story. The removal of the Federal Reserve’s asset cap in June 2025 eliminated a major constraint on the bank’s ability to expand its balance sheet. The effect is becoming visible in its operating figures.

Second-quarter loans increased 12% year over year to $1 trillion, while investment-banking fees rose 35% to $939 million. Markets revenue also increased 24% to $2.2 billion. These figures indicate that Wells Fargo is beginning to convert its broader strategic repositioning into measurable business growth.

However, the transformation remains expensive. Personnel costs reached approximately $8 billion during the quarter, reflecting continued investment in compliance and risk-management infrastructure. Excluding its markets business, net interest income increased only 2%, highlighting sensitivity to deposit pricing and changes in the yield curve.

What the Valuation Debate Means for Wealth

The So What? for sophisticated investors is straightforward: a low earnings multiple is meaningful only when the underlying earnings are durable. JPMorgan’s strength lies in the breadth and scale of its franchise, while Wells Fargo offers a more visible restructuring and growth story following the asset-cap removal.

For HNWI evaluating banking counterparties or financial-sector exposure, the more important question is whether current earnings represent sustainable franchise strength or a favorable point in the cycle. Monitoring capital generation, credit quality, net interest income and investment-banking activity will therefore be more informative than the headline multiple alone.
