Charles Schwab is broadening its financial platform in an effort to capture more of the economic value generated by its enormous client base. Rather than relying predominantly on brokerage activity, the firm is expanding wealth management, banking, lending and digital assets, creating additional opportunities to deepen relationships without requiring proportional increases in client acquisition.
Schwab ended July with $13.04 trillion in total client assets, supported by 39.9 million active brokerage accounts, 5.9 million workplace plan participant accounts and 2.4 million banking accounts. Core net new assets reached $58.1 billion during July, increasing 24% year over year.
For Schwab, the strategic value of this scale is substantial. Each existing relationship provides an opportunity to introduce additional services, potentially increasing client wallet share while leveraging infrastructure that is already in place.
Schwab has expanded its investment offering through Schwab Crypto, giving retail clients direct access to Bitcoin and Ethereum trading. The company plans to add Solana, Avalanche and Chainlink, further broadening the digital-asset offering.
The move places digital assets within Schwab’s broader investment ecosystem rather than treating them as a separate proposition. The firm has also introduced Portfolio Insights, a generative AI-powered tool intended to help clients better understand portfolio performance.
Trading activity remains strong. Daily average trades reached 10.9 million in the first half of 2026, up 46% year over year, while trading revenue increased 24% to $2.3 billion. Schwab is therefore combining product expansion with unusually strong client activity.
The firm is also increasing its emphasis on wealth management. First-half net flows into Managed Investing Solutions rose almost 50% year over year, while asset management and administration fees increased 16% to $3.6 billion.
This shift is strategically important because greater adoption of managed solutions can generate more recurring, asset-based revenue. For Schwab, that creates a potentially more balanced business model in which earnings are less dependent on trading volumes alone.
Schwab’s banking and lending businesses are becoming another meaningful growth engine. Bank loan balances reached $67 billion as of June 30, up 33% year over year, while Pledged Asset Line balances surged 59% to $33.4 billion.
For sophisticated clients, the significance extends beyond headline growth. Schwab is building an integrated platform spanning investments, liquidity, lending and wealth management. If the firm can continue moving clients across these services, its enormous asset base could become increasingly productive without requiring equivalent expansion in its customer base.
The central strategic test is execution: whether Schwab can maintain strong asset gathering while expanding higher-value services and managing the risks associated with banking, lending and digital assets.
